I ran across this article on a security board. It discusses an existing area on ATA harddrives that is hidden from all normal software and BIOS detection. Drive manufacturers intended its use for general information, but apparently there are tools out there to open the area up for storage of data which would not be normally found on a forensic's search. This is yet another reason not to trust software that overwrites your data. Things like this are not known or protected by such software, and if you are protecting sensitive company, government, or personal information on a hard drive, you must be extra careful!
