ramdrive in xp doens't work |
Lead | |

I can't open/explore the recently made ramdrive...I did everything exactly the way he wrote. When I write click on the ram drive and go to properties, it says the file system is RAW. Any clues as to how I can use a ramdrive in xp? ( Ramdisk NT does not work either )

ramdrive in xp doesn't work | ||
|
The ramdrive.sys that MS provides does work in WinXP but only intermittently (it has worked for me sometimes) and not consistently enough to use. Microsoft provides a ramdisk.sys driver for Windows 2000 at
support.microsoft.com/sup...7/4/05.ASP and has information at the bottom of the article about support for XP but the driver needs to be recompiled after a slight change to the code which no one has seemed to have done. I have posted this question in several forums with zero help. It doesn't seem to have much interest. |

I've found that when you don't have any FAT device at boot time W2K or XP does not load the Fastfat driver. It happened to me on a Laptop without a floppy drive and the disk formatted in NTFS.
I've solved this problem on W2K by forcing Fastfast to load by changing the following registry entry: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Fastfat Change the "Start" value from 4 to 1 Exit registry editor and reboot. Enjoy! Ref: pub29.ezboard.com/fcyberw...21&stop=37 |

The shareware ($35) probably works in XP but I was hoping someone had fixed the msramdrive to work in XP or had other cheap options.
... What does the FastFAT driver have to do with ramdrive? -Scott |

It is the FAT file system driver. MS Ramdisk.sys needs FAT file system to work. If at the boot environment Fastfast is not loaded (as it happens with floppyless notebook computer with NTFS hard disk) the Fastfat driver is not loaded and when later ramdisk.sys is loaded to memory the drive is not fully functional and system tells you that drive is not formatted or similar error messages.
I hope this makes it a bit more clear. |

Hey! That worked! This is what I've been looking for for months. Thank you so much! It all makes sense now. I have a floppy-less ThinkPad with only NTFS drives.
Now, why must the ramdrive be FAT? Why not NTFS? -Scott |

NTFS is still guarded strictly by MS and much about it (source code) is undocumented. However, you can still format a RAM disk using the NTFS file system by issuing the command: format r: /fs:ntfs
(where r: is the RAM disk letter) at the command line. By saving and reloading the RAM disk image you can automatically start with an NTFS formatted RAM disk, since the disk image format overrides any other configuration settings. Ramdisk W2K, thanks for posting a quick fix for those having issues with NTFS. Do you mind I add your fix to the Ramdisk Article? |

So, I would still need to load fastfat? Then, load the NTFS disk image. Is there any real advantage to formatting the ramdisk as NTFS or using an NTFS disk image?

RamDrive in XP | ||

Hi
Have Added Ramdrive to XP by using add hardware device. Used the MS Ramdrive.sys and ramdrive.inf. Ramdrive shows up in Device Manager but not as a drive in my computer. Ramdrive has subcategories "Windows Ramdisk Controller" and "Windows Ramdisk device". Both are working properly in Device Manager. Any ideas? Thanks Martin Fine |
